When Isa, my vibrant ten-year old, abruptly descended into psychosis, I found myself in a race against time to prove he was sick — not insane. While doctors defaulted to psychiatric explanations and accusations, Isa was fading, leaving me in the impossible role of mother, detective, and defendant.

Through a tumultuous, five-year journey, I uncovered disturbing echoes of symptoms that spanned three generations and threatened the lives of the people I loved most. What followed was a high stakes struggle between maternal instinct and institutional authority.

What we survived showed me how quickly families in crisis can be dismissed, how easily truth can be buried, and how dangerous a system can become when its beliefs are challenged.

This memoir raises awareness for a highly charged diagnosis that affects up to one in two hundred children. Awareness could save thousands of kids from being tragically relegated to psychiatric wards.
